Gaslight (1944)

Get the popcorn and turn off the cell phone! This is where the term “gas-lighting” comes from… Charles Boyer plays a sinister husband out to systematically make his wife crazy. It holds up! Great acting and ratcheting tension. A must see if you like movies. Nominated for seven Oscars. Ingrid Bergman won for Best Actress; a very young Angela Landsbury was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. This film holds up as a classic.  There is a 1940 British version as well…not bad, worth watching for comparison, but Boyer, Bergman and Landsbury are tough to beat.

  1. Can I just say what a relief to uncover someone who truly understands what they are discussing on the internet. You actually know how to bring a problem to light and make it important. More people must look at this and understand this side of the story. I was surprised that you aren’t more popular given that you definitely possess the gift.

    • Many blessings upon your head for your kind words! Apologies for the delay; I haven’t checked my comments as until recently they’ve all been spam telling me how to improve my website or sell me Viagra. Been speaking to the void for a couple years now. Guess the “high verbal” and English major stuff got me here. Had a midlife crisis some years ago and had a deep think. Didn’t sign on to be a secretary my whole life. What DID I want to do? Oh, yeah! WRITE. Trying to make a go of it, mostly typing into the void. Editing book #6. Many thanks for the encouragement. More movie reviews coming asap. Best wishes! (By the way, I haven’t mentioned it on Haint’s blog, but I’ve written three collections of ghost stories, inspired by classic English ghost stories and Twilight-Zone-kind of creepy with a bit of campy Elvira thrown in from time to time. If spooky but not graphic horror floats your boat, I have a web page, hedonistichoundpress.com with info.)
